CPR: Reviving Large-scale IT Projects
A 13-point Methodology for Turning Around Large IT Projects
_______________________
Thursday, March 22, 2007
At ITT Technical Institute–Learning Site,
Pre-meeting Presentation @ 6:30 pm • Snacks and Program @ 7:30 to 9:00 pm
Warren S. Reid, Managing Director, WSR Consulting Group, LLC
In 2004, one-third of all IT projects were reported as failed and were scrapped! One-third were “challenged” and came in with deplorable budget and schedule overruns! Only one-third were deemed successful!
Warren S. Reid will show you what can, and in most cases, must be done to turn around the runaway IT project and try to get it into the “successful” column -- before you ever litigate (and hopefully, you won’t have to). By referencing actual anecdotal turnaround cases (and some litigation situations that could have been avoided) that he has worked on, Mr. Reid will present a proprietary 13-step model that focuses on what actions must be taken during a failing project to turn around, overcome and compensate for project management, methodology, technology and people deficiencies/issues.
A real bonus to Mr. Reid’s presentation and model is that this same model and related procedures, if contracted for and employed early in a project, will prevent runaway situations; it is also useful as a yardstick for good IT industry standards and practices to be used in the courtroom.
This Presentation includes:
1. The CPR (Coordinated Project Recovery) Model and a presentation of the 13 critical steps, including:
a. Revising your business case & estimates
b. HUA! Defining “Success”
c. Implementing a SWAT (SoftWare Adjudication Team)
d. Early and on-going application “adoption”
e. Evaluating & properly executing outsourcing
f. Adopting an appropriate methodology
g. Conducting reliable and necessary testing
2. Software project statistics and trends over the past 8 years
3. Typical U.S.latent error/defect statistics for various types of software projects
4. Definition of software project estimating factors
5. Typical known risks before a project starts

Pre Meeting Interactive Discussion at 6:30PM:
10 Recurring Themes: What Juries Hear – Every Time – In Large-Scale Systems Failure Projects
One of the fastest growing areas of litigation in the legal profession is lawsuits involving large-scale/enterprise system failures. The claims, and in some cases the judgments, can be astronomical.
Even though you believe you/your client have developed a superb contract, performed great work, have followed industry and world-class standards, and tested and delivered a viable solution, you may still find yourself in a courtroom with an unhappy vendor, integrator, or customer.
Mr. Reid has been involved in such lawsuits in Europe,
1. Systems Development and Implementation Methodology (ies) used
2. Project Management organization and tools used employed
3. Scope of Work and related contractual responsibilities
4. Scope change and resulting schedule and estimation changes
5. Systems, Acceptance and Service Level Objectives Testing, and criteria and readiness for Go-Live
6. Conversion and Interface strategy, management, control, and testing
7. Quality Assurance and/or IV&V (Independent Verification and Validation employed)
In this brief Pre-meeting session, Mr. Reid will get you talking, shaking your heads, laughing or even crying, sometimes in disbelief, as he gets YOU to share (anonymously, of course) your experiences.
