ABOUT THE CONFERENCE CO-CHAIRS

Michael D. Scott, Co-Chair, IT Law Conference
Professor Michael D. Scott is a national authority who is considered one of the "pioneers" in computer and high-tech law. He teaches primarily in the intellectual property and related areas at Southwestern.

Formerly a partner with the law firm of Perkins Coie, Professor Scott has over 29 years of experience representing high-technology clients. He has been an adjunct professor at Loyola, Pepperdine and Western State Law School in addition to Southwestern where his relationship as an adjunct dates back to 1976.

Professor Scott currently serves as Editor-in-Chief of The Cyberspace Lawyer (since 1996) and E-Commerce Law Report (since 1998); is a member of the Advisory Board of Derecho de la Alta Tecnologia (Argentina) and Computer Standards and Interfaces (Holland); and serves as a correspondent to Computer Law & Security Report (England). He also serves as Co-Chair of the California State Bar's Intellectual Property Section, Computer/Internet Roundtable.

A frequent speaker on computer and technology issues, Professor Scott has appeared before a range of international professionals. For example, he spoke to the California Lawyers for the Arts on "What Artists Need to Know About Copyright Law and the Internet," the Annual Seminar on Legal and Business Aspects of the Internet on "Web Broadcasting of Music and Music Videos," the Portuguese Law Society on "Preparing for the Year 2000 Legal Crisis" and the IBC conference in Hong Kong on "The Domain Name System: Where We Are, Where We Are Going".

Professor Scott earned his bachelors degree in mathematics with an emphasis on computer software design and development at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (B.S. 1967) and worked in the computer industry before entering law school. He earned his J.D. from UCLA (1974) and served as a member of the Board of Editors of the UCLA-Alaska Law Review. In addition to his licenses to practice law, Professor Scott is also licensed as a member of the United States Patent Bar.

Warren S. Reid, Co-Chair, IT Law Conference
Following a distinguished career as a management and computer technology consultant and partner at an international consulting firm, Warren S. Reid founded the WSR Consulting Group, LLC in 1988. He has been engaged in developing and implementing large-scale systems and turning around systems in crisis situations, such as helping create and launch the Federal Energy Office for President Jimmy Carter in 75 days, and overseeing the testing and acceptance of California’s Lotto Lottery games in just 100 days.

For more than 18 years, Mr. Reid has been actively engaged in litigation matters in the United States, Canada, Asia and Europe as a consultant and expert in cases involving the failure of large-scale systems and related projects including those embracing computer, internet, enterprise, point-of-sale, smart building, robotics, and Y2K systems technologies and platforms. He has testified in U.S. State and Federal Courts, and has been engaged as an expert by a “Who’s Who” in the world of international business including: the U.S. Department of Justice and President William Clinton; the Malaysian Stock Exchange; Pepsico; Her Royal Majesty, the Queen of England; Compuserve; a European computer PC and server hardware manufacturer; Fortune 500 retailers; and ERP software developers --just to mention a few highlights.

Mr. Reid graduated with highest honors from Baruch College in New York City and earned his M.S. and M.B.A. degrees from the Wharton Graduate School of Finance. Mr. Reid is the author of over seventy-five published business and technology articles (many of them peer-reviewed), quoted in numerous books, and is the co-author with Michael D. Scott, Esquire, of a best selling book -- The Year 2000 Computer Crisis: Law, Business and Technology. He has appeared on radio and CNN as an expert in the systems and technology fields.

 

Enrique Jimenez Batalla, Keynote Speaker
Enrique Jimenez Batalla is senior partner in the Madrid, Spain firm of Enrique Batalla Abogados where he specializes in information technology law. He is a graduate of the University of Granada and studied in Washington, D.C. at the International Juridical Practices. Batalla is a member of the Madrid Bar Association, the Licensing Executives Society, the IPBA, the AIPPI, the ECTA, the International Bar Association, where he is an officer of Committee R, the Computer Law Association, where he is Secretary of the Board of Directors, and the Hispano-Chinese, Hispano-Japanese and Hispano- Taiwanese Bilateral Committees of the Spain Chambers of Commerce High Council.

 

 

Carmi Zlotnik, Keynote Speaker
Carmi Zlotnik is Executive Vice President, Original Programming, Business Development and New Media at HBO. Zlotnik is involved in all aspects of strategy and implementation of original programming objectives, as well as the operation and administration of the department. Zlotnik joined HBO in August 1987 as director of production for original programming, and was responsible for overseeing all west-coast production. In 1991 he was named Vice President, West Coast Production for HBO Original Programming and Senior Vice President of HBO Independent Productions, giving him the responsibility for overseeing production on movies, miniseries, specials and series. In 1996 he was named Vice President, Original Programming, Creative Operations (a newly created position) and was promoted to Senior Vice President, Original Programming, Creative Operations in January 2000. Prior to working for HBO, he supervised production on numerous entertainment specials and television series for HBO and broadcast networks. His production experience includes features, commercials, and special effects for numerous companies. In 1989, Zlotnik received a Cable ACE® Award and an Emmy® nomination for his work as co-producer on the HBO Comedy Special “ Billy Crystal: Midnight Train to Moscow.”
