Demystifying the SEI CMMI:
This presentation introduces systems and software engineering managers and practitioners to the Software Engineering Institute (SEI) Capability Maturity Model Integration (CMMI®) fundamental concepts. CMMI models are tools that help organizations improve their ability to develop and maintain quality products and services. CMMI models are an integration of best practices from proven process improvement models, including the CMM for Software, EIA 731, and the Integrated Product Development CMM.
Treat Your Test Tools with Respect
Testing tools are often handled in the same casual manner as personal desktop tools. However, as disciplined test practices grow and test tools become key enablers of the testing or test management process, they become a critical success factor in the future of the test practice. This presentation covers considerations, planning, building and maintaining a solid, reliable and robust test tools infrastructure. It provides the hows, whys and whats of the mantra "Treat It Like Production!"
Understanding the Specifics of Use-Case-Driven Testing
This presentation gives the “big picture” of use-case-driven testing and discusses: (1) Decomposing the test process into separate workflows; (2) Understanding the level of details captured by use cases; (3) Handling the iterative evolution of the use-case model; (4) Analyzing the use case types and relationships; (5) Understanding the difference in approaches to testing concrete vs. abstract use cases.
Do You Want to Dance: QA & QC Face off
This session examines the often misunderstood relationship between QA and QC. It looks at how the two groups are viewed throughout the organization in general and addresses some common misconceptions. We review the "he said, she said" approach to demonstrating the synergies and differences between the worlds of Quality Assurance and Quality Control. It will provide a useful foundation for those new to the QA/QC world.
Building Testable Applications
The latest software development tools and techniques are delivering more functionality faster than ever, yet these productivity gains are often lost during the test phase because these applications can be tested only manually. This happens because generated code is generally treated as throwaway, which means that automated test scripts can’t be reused. In other cases developers don’t expose the information that automated tests need to work, or incorporate third party components that aren’t accessible.
Find out what it takes to develop applications that support test automation and enable the long term maintenance of test libraries, and learn how to educate both development and senior management about the importance of designing in testability.
Total Quality Management (TQM), Lean Manufacturing (LM) to Improve Software Quality
TQM and LM are common disciplines in manufacturing environments, but have only recently received attention as aids for software development. This presentation discusses TQM and LM methodologies that can be used as part of the software development process. TQM and LM provide a framework to integrate many of the current approaches to software quality, resulting in technically correct systems, which might solve customers’ business problems more effectively.
Managing QAT Resources under Tight Deadlines: Are You Doc. Oc or Mr. Incredible?
In the IT world, many small, medium and large projects concurrently draw upon resources and pull them in many directions. The juggling of these resources is a continuous challenge at Scotiabank HR Systems as in every IT department and organization. This session reviews these challenges, discusses project management methodologies in place at the bank and, using real examples, demonstrates some tools and techniques utilized to maintain a high level of quality in all systems delivered in HR Systems.
Superhero of Quality
Being a “Superhero” of Quality
The role of quality in the workplace has many similarities to the role of “Superheroes” in society. The session will help participants see the things they are able to accomplish as “the saving grace” of the workplace. Several familiar Superheroes will be reviewed and how their unique characteristics are so much like those of the quality professional. The archenemy of each Superhero seems to resemble those enemies of quality in the workplace.
The most powerful quality of any Superhero is to understand their weaknesses and solicit support from others who possess those missing traits. The session will cover how to unite the special qualities of each superhero to create the League of Champions!!!! Prepare to learn and laugh as we explore being Superheroes of Quality.
Walkthroughs: Why Bother?
Can conducting walkthroughs at each stage of development pay dividends? Can you actually contain defects and reduce rework in later development stages? Are there alternatives to the formal walkthrough? Answers to these questions and more are provided in this presentation.
Measurement within the CMMI
In brief, many organizations have learned that a solid, well-aligned measurement program is a benefit, both in satisfying todays business goals and in support of process improvement. This lesson is one of the reasons that the CMMI has an increased focus on measurement. Borland will show you how various organizations have addressed these changes in their business focus. This is information that you can apply directly to your organization, so be sure to take good notes and ask questions.
The Scope Game – Winning With a Moving QA Target
"It may have been what I told you I needed – but it’s not what I want” - this story repeats itself project after project. Scope change will always be an issue. Delivering mockups, prototypes or a complete system to users will cause them to think of and ask for more, when they see what they can have – it’s human nature. Knowing when to defer “newly uncovered but necessary” requirements to a future release, or whether to scale them down, or how and when to use workarounds can make a big difference in keeping costs, schedule, quality, and functionality in balance when scope creeps, or gallops away, during a project. This presentation will review the need for QA and Testing professionals to keep pace with the moving target of what the client wants – and provide insights into how project managers can help QA and Testing professionals keep pace with the change.
Improving Software Metric Effectiveness with Statistical Process Control
Statistical Process Control (SPC) techniques are common in manufacturing environments, but uncommon in the software industry. SPC techniques are extremely useful for understanding process capabilities, quickly identifying process deviations, and controlling product quality. This session reviews the challenges of implementing SPC and provides practical examples of SPC implementation across the software development lifecycle. Note that the presentation was co-authored by Dr. Stephen Kan, also of IBM.
Demystifying the SEI CMMI PPQA, Verification & Validation Process Areas
The purpose of the Software Engineering Institute (SEI) Capability Maturity Model® Integration (CMMI®) Process and Product Quality Assurance (PPQA) Process Area is to provide staff and management with objective insight into processes and associated work products. This presentation reviews the elements of PPQA, the SEI Verification Process Area and the SEI CMMI Validation Process Area and how they are applied within an organization to deliver a quality product.
Reducing the Real Cost of Software Testing
Learn how to estimate the real cost of software testing in a company that develops critical software with predefined quality. Learn how to save when designing and implementing a testing process, how to get and keep the “Right Staff”, what is the “Right Stuff” when building a test environment, how to calculate the cost effectiveness metrics, how to present and convince company management to invest properly in software testing and get a great ROI.
